-Need stronger identity as a city

-Vehicles for local investment

-Local and community investment very important to focus on – can build on orec

-Better ways to communicate a cross different parts/sectors of the city

-Need for link between grassroots and leadership (govt, business, etc)

-Better cross communication between urban and rural

-Youth, homeless, other marginalized groups need to engage them better

-Community gardens

-Working together on solutions

-Are we focusing on things we really want to do or are we just doing same as always?

-Community gardens, partnerships between lots of different players

-E.g – habitat and cycle salvation

-What would it take to maximize potential of community gardens??

-How to act on the potential?

-Is there opportunity for grassroots to have more impact?

-How can we make things easier – red tape minimize

-Work with school system – not engaging as much as could

-Caution that change takes time; recognize the whole process around change and time it takes

-Barriers – bigger institutions – need to get out and build connections

-How do we harness the passion?

-Individuals – feet in many worlds, volunteers, links with accidence sector eg

-Use big events to address the issue broadly and build from that

-We keep reinventing the wheels

-Need consistent political leadership at the highest level

-When players change, gets reinvented

-Need to find all-encompassing political leadership

-Need to recognize what’s been done

-Missing hubs and think tanks – starting to happen now

-Amplify our message to city hall and the province and have public/private collaborations to amplify message

-”Under one roof” is social innovators who collaborate and want to work together

-Existing transportation system not fun and hard to use;

-Ottawa – big organizations aren’t recycling

I have an idea for the “Existing transportation system not fun and hard to use” comment. There exists a lot of potential in our local Vrtucar car sharing program. In Quebec, communauto has recently added 50 new Nissan Leafs to their fleet with the help of HydroQuebec and Nissan Canada. Also Toronto’s Autoshare has added 3 EV’s with the help of the Toronto Atmospheric Fund’s Fleetwise EV300 initiative.
In speaking with Wilson Wood, Vrtucar’s founder, there is no current partnership with HydroOttawa and we lack a TAF in Ottawa. For them to add a Nissan leaf they would require $6-7000 to afford the additional expense of the car, about $6000 for a charging station and a parking space.
I had the impression from speaking with him that if these action items were met that we could add more EV’s to Ottawa’s car sharing program!
